Rules Updates (Issue 6)

The old editions of the updates (before issue 3) are now included in the main rules. As a result of this they have been removed from the web site. Anybody with the a copy of the old rules will get a discount if they purchase the new rules at a show.

NEW RULES: CHARACTER PROGRESSION

WDF limits its Characters and Monsters to the statistics and powers there included. What makes the game different are the scenarios that can be played and from henceforth, each new Issue will include a scenario, hopefully each one sufficiently different to the previous one to cause the reader to gasp in sheer adulation. But returning back to this planets orbit we at the WDF stable (nothing to do with wrestling!) have decided that there is a difference between an inexperienced sage and an experienced sage. The same can be said for other 'careers' within the WDF world, both Good and Evil.

So here it is the definitive guide to raising your Chosen or Warlock to dizzy new heights. Note the Characters remain frail and will certainly still bleed all over the table if ravaged by a chainsaw, though they might just wise up enough to avoid it (and probably walk into a harpoon instead!).

The system could not be simpler. Each Character starts off as per the basic rule book, see above for availability. As they perform various acts they will amass experience points (yes its that old system again).

HOW IT WORKS

When a Character reaches the 2nd Level, they may add or enhance one skill (only certain skills may be enhanced) and add 1 to their top score which in the case of the Chosen would be Attack. If a Chosen reached the 3rd Level, she can add or enhance one skill and add 1 to her Intelligence. An Arcane Sage would add to their Intelligence first and then their Attack score. At fourth level the Character may enhance any score apart from Hits. So that Defence or Armour could be raised by 1. At 10th Level , the Character is assumed to have reached his or her zenith.

EPILOGUE

Please try these out and let us know what you think at . Other Characters may be extended into these 'career' structures, though the though of a Builder going from Cowboy to Free Mason could be interesting.

POSSESSION - OR MAXIMISING A VISITATIONS ASSETS

Currently, when a Visitation calls on this plane with their astral being, they are in constant danger of being pulled back home whether or not they want to be which is a bit of a pain when visiting for Christmas. In order to extend their visit, Visitations may attempt to possess a living body on this side. This may be done willingly by some lunatic such as a cultist or a Warlock, or forcibly on some poor student, builder or clown for example. Possession requires 1 Action to attempt. NOTE: If the attempt fails, the Visitation is instantly hurled back to their own plane and out of play! The Visitation must be within 3" of the anticipated recipient.

  • If the recipient is willing, the possession will take place provided the Visitation rolls under Intelligence.
  • If the recipient is hostile, both the victim and the Visitation roll a d6 and add their respective Intelligence.
  • If the recipient is higher or equal to the Visitations, the Visitation is banished as above.
  • If the Vistation is higher than the Recipient, tenancy is complete.
  • Whilst in the host body, a Visitation possesses its own skills and powers (including spells), it cannot use the hosts. However, the Visitation uses the Hosts attribute scores, it cannot use its own. If the Hosts Hits are reduced to zero, the Visitation must find and possess another body within 1 turn or it is banished.
  • Whilst in the host body, the Visitation does not have to roll to stay on this plane.
  • To exorcise the Visitation requires a Remove Curse or Turn skill successfully applied within 5", the Visitation is then banished as above. Instead of the Casters Intelligence being used, the roll must be under the original Hosts intelligence! If this is attempted whatever the result, the Host suffers 1 Hit of damage.

NEW MONSTERS - ANTI-HEROES

In order to try out the Character Progression rules, you might like to utilize some Anti-Heroes.

DARK CHOSEN: These are Chosen who have been corrupted by the dark side. Their ideals compromised, they stalk the Chosen and destroy them wherever they can be found. Dark Chosen are often found as aides or assassins for evil Visitations who have been able to maintain their form on earth.
Skills: As Chosen.
Attributes: As Chosen.

WARLOCK: Having chosen the path of necromancy, these sorcerers explore the evil arts with the sole aim of increasing their own power and prestige. They will ally with others to achieve their nefarious goals but are just as likely to drop their so-called new friends 'in it'.
Skills: As White Witch except that they use Evil Magicks
Attributes: As White Witch, except that Intelligence is -1 and Attack is +1.

Anti-heroes can also use the Character Progression Rules, should you choose, treat them in the same way as their goodly counterparts.

HANDY BITS

A BRIEF WORD ON FIGURES
There have been a number of queries to our web site asking about suitable figures for WDF.
Here is our response...

The two main figure elements of the game comprise

  1. Figures from the horror genre i.e. Vampires, Ghouls, Ghosties and that sort of thing.
  2. Figures of everyday people i.e. Janitors, Gymnasts and Vampire Slayers.
Horror Genre
The key ranges are

Reaper Miniatures; available from Miniature Figurines Ltd,
1-5 Graham Road, Southampton SO14 OAX
Their range includes most of the spooks and monsters used in WDF, especially your classic Hammer Horror vampires and 02217, a 'Roller Girl' we use for our extreme sports model.
Here are a few other specials
02132 Zombie Werewolf, (Boracht)
02199 Claudia Von Mondstein, (Lady Victoria)
02166 Khalith, Black Mummy King (Set-Athith)

Citadel Miniatures
Certain of the Undead ranges have useful bits, including a Vampire Cat!
Due to their high fantasy nature, they are more useful for Gothic Vampires and the like.

Harlequin
Superb value boxed sets of Undead include Wraiths, Skeletons and Zombies with weapons.
Their latest foray takes them into the Horror genre full pelt and includes
Lon Chaney Werewolves, Christopher Lee Vampires and Boris Karloff's Frankenstein.

Kallistra
Apart from their amazing ship range, they also do a nifty pack of Zombies a definite must have!

Out of Production
Where you can get them, try Grenadier/Ral Pathas Cyberpunk ranges such as Shadowrun. There are some really neat bozos wearing long coats with lots of street cred.

Everyday People

GZG
Their street people/civilian range contains a lot of useful figures, such as Mechanics, Students, FBI Agents, Reporters, Investigators, Priests, Nuns and of course a Teenage Vampire Slayer. We used a female rioter as a Builder and a Looter carrying the TV as the Delivery Man.
Of special note are the Gentlemans Collectibles. They include figures that with a little tactical paint jobs will give you Boxers, Gymnasts, Models and Athletes without causing a stir in public!

Citadel Miniatures
Not much in the way of normal civilians, but from the Bloodbowl range we found our Football Jock and Cheerleader.

Harlequin
The Doctor Who range is a must. The Doctors themselves make great Arcane Sages and Teachers while the companions are another source of students and civilians. Adric makes a great Computer Geek! At this time due to the licensing debate, the range is being put on hold but you can buy figures on a 3 for two basis.

Foundry
Check out the civilian ranges. Certain of their Victorian ranges are timeless though a little small. The Colonial Adventurers make good Big Game Hunters. They have also produced a number of limited editions including Frankensteins bride and a natty mummy. Perhaps with enough interest, they may produce these as ranges in their own right.

TRAWLING

Cheap figure boxes and Bring and Buys at shows and shops. That is where we found our Indiana Jones type Archaeologist (Citadel)
Plastic Beasts, Bugs and Animals such as Britain's ranges. Mantis and Golgoth.

Finally, the figures are out there...but you may already have them. We will put a comprehensive list on the web one day but half the joy of playing WDF is watching your players faces when they find themselves facing that beastie you'd always had at the bottom of your figure drawer but never thought you would use.
